Youth results update

by Deryck Vincent Uncategorized No Comments

It was a quiet enough weekend on the youth front but after the great battling shown by the under13s in their midweek win (as reported by Rod) it was important that we kept the momentum going and indeed we did.  Sadly the under 11A game on Saturday had be postponed (before the weather would have) due to the opposition being unable to field a full side and the under 13B game against YMCA fell foul of the heavy overnight rain.  It was left to the under 11B and C teams who travelled to Old Belvedere (good to see them back at youth level again) for a double header.  In contrasting games we came back to Casle Avenue with 2 wins.  The C team had a comprehensive victory but the B team needed heroics from a last pair of Daire Vickers and Harry Opperman to see them home by a mere 2 runs.  Well done to all.

The success of these teams is directly related to the excellent work which starts on Friday nights and continues with the excellent coaching mid week with the under age squads.  For that we are indebted to Paddy Lee for his organisation on Fridays which has transformed the night into something very special and of course to Rod Hokin for his excellence in putting in place and carrying out coaching of the highest order.  These things are not happening by chance but by hard work and planning. Thanks to everyone involved.

Ladies Seconds Win - score 172 vs Pembroke

by Suzie Perry Uncategorized No Comments
Last Thursday the Ladies seconds scored a record 172 for 2 off 20.
Laura Erskine and Viv Shaw opened the batting against Pembroke for our second match of the season.
Laura made a fantastic 46 and Viv contributed an impressive 34. Megan Oliver made 11 not out.
But it was Fiona Manning/Vincent who stole the show with a score of 54 not out in her first women’s match for a few years. She let the Vincent side down though by not celebrating her half century with the same ‘bounce’ as Deryck!
Laura and Viv took three wickets apiece and our newest player, Una Raymond Hoey from the under-13’s also bowled.
Well Done Team - same again tonight please!

23 in a row

The Under 13A team continued a remarkable winning run when they defeated highly fancied Pembroke last night in a nail-biting match. Bowling first Adam Craig took 2 crucial wickets with outstanding swinging deliveries. Kevin Byrne was introduced and tied down the Pembroke middle order. Wickets fell at regular intervals before in his 2nd spell David Delany cleaned up the tail taking 3 wickets in an over.

The target of 81 in 20 overs was about par on a large ground. The Tarf top order was soon back in the pavilion following an exhibition of leg-spin bowling. James Foxe and Adam Craig led a counter-attack punishing anything loose. After a good partnership both lads were out with 20 odd needed to win. Manager Gerry Delany produced a master-stroke by promoting Pat Kirk up the order to deal with a barrage of pace bowling. Kirk flashed at anything loose. Soon 4 runs were needed off the last over. Stephen O’Quigley ran well to leave Kirk on strike with 2 balls remaining. A pull shot was almost spectacularly caught but Tarf were home for a brilliant win.

Many thanks to the large number of supporters who made the trip to Pembroke including Tom Prior, Greg Molins and Brian O’Sullivan. The team is now undefeated in its last 23 matches. Even more remarkable is the fact that 12 members of the squad are underage.
