6ths lose to Rush

by Tom James Uncategorized No Comments

There haven’t been many match reports of late so here’s what happened when the 6ths played Rush on Sunday. We arrived in a very wet Rush and it was clear we wouldn’t be starting on time. After some creative work on the run ups by the Rush lads however we eventually got going for a 28 over game. I won the toss and decided to bat thinking I didn’t fancy chasing a total on a soggy mat.

With 4 runs on the board we lost our first wicket and I was wondering had I got it wrong. Marguerite Burke and Kevin O’Connor slowly built their partnership and started to look comfortable. It ended up being the highest partnership of the season so far of 94 runs with both batting very well. Kevin fell on 41 with a couple of overs remaining while Marguerite finished with an unbeaten 43 as we were 102/2 after our 28 overs.

I was pleased with the score and thought we had a good chance of defending it if we bowled well. Unfortunately the bowlers never really found their line and with only 10 fielders it was difficult to plug the gaps to the small boundaries. Rush raced towards the total and reached it comfortably in the 21st over with five wickets down. Vidyha was the pick of the bowlers with 2-16.

It was disappointing having posted a relatively good score to be beaten, but having not played in a month bowlers and fielders looked rusty. The exception to this would be two great catches from Orwell and Vidhya and Kevin and John Mullins who in their first game for the 6ths fielded superbly and showed the rest of us how it should be done. With six games to come in August there should be no such problems with rustiness and hopefully we can put together a bit of a run as we head towards the business end of the season.
